Exodus – The Ten Plagues in the Bible

September 28, 2012 by Admin-FSN Leave a Comment

Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and said, “God commanded us to worship him in the wilderness. Let the Israelites go so that they can take a three days journey and hold a feast to the Lord in the wilderness.”

But Pharaoh said, “Why are you trying to take the people of Israel away? Why did you want to stop the people from their work? The Israelites are numerous now. Why should they rest from their labor?”

During the same day, Pharaoh gave command to the slave master to force the Israelites to make bricks without giving them straws.

The slave master obeyed Pharaoh and never gave the Israelites straw to make bricks. So the Israelites had to find straw to make the bricks. This had increased the burdens of the Israelites.

When the Israelites couldn’t meet the quota of the bricks, the slave masters beat them.

The people complained to Moses. Moses prayed to the Lord for help.

Then the Lord spoke to Moses, “Go to Pharaoh. Take your rod and perform the sign in front of Pharaoh.”

Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and did as God commanded them. And the staff turned into a serpent.

Pharaoh called his magicians to do the same but Moses’ serpent swallowed the magician’s serpent. And Pharaoh’s heart became hard and refused to let the Israelites go.

So The Lord sent the first plague on Egypt. He turned the water in the Nile River into blood. The water in the river had a foul smell and the Egyptians had no water to drink.

Pharaoh’s magicians did the same. Pharaoh’s heart grew hard and refused to let the Israelites go.

God told Moses to stretch out his staff over the streams, river and ponds so that frogs will come up on the land of Egypt.

Moses did as God commanded him and all the frogs come up on the land of Egypt. The frogs were so numerous that it covered the whole land of Egypt.

Then Pharaoh said to Moses, “Please pray to the Lord to take away all these frogs and I will let the people of Israelites go so that they can offer sacrifices to the Lord.”

Moses prayed to God to take away the frogs from Egypt. God listen to Moses’ prayer and all the frogs in Egypt died.

When Pharaoh saw that the frogs are no more, his heart became hardened and refused to let the Israelites go.

So the Lord said to Moses, “Stretch out your staff and strike the dust in the ground so that they will become lice and invade the land of Egypt.”

Moses obeyed the Lord and strikes the dust in the ground with his staff and they become lice throughout the land of Egypt. The lice were on the Egyptians and livestock.

Pharaoh’s magician tried to do the same but they couldn’t.

Pharaoh’s magician said to Pharaoh, “It must be God who had done all these things.”Pharaoh refused to listen and his heart is hardened.

So the Lord sends the fourth plague of flies to Egypt. God sent a thick swarm of flies on Egypt. The flies enter the house of Pharaoh and Pharaoh’s servants and all the land of Egypt.

The Pharaoh called Moses and said, “Please pray that God will take away these flies from Egypt and I will let the Israelites go to sacrifice to the Lord.”

So Moses prayed to the Lord to take away the flies. The Lord listened to the prayer of Moses and removed the flies from Pharaoh and his people.

But when Pharaoh sees that there are no more flies, he broke his promise and never let the Israelites go.

The Lord sent the fifth plague of diseases on the livestock of the Egyptians.

The livestock of the children of Israel were not affected by the pestilence.

All the livestock of Egypt including horses, donkeys, camels and cattle died from the disease. But Pharaoh’s heart hardened. Pharaoh still refused to let the Israelites go.

So God afflicted Egypt with the sixth plague of boils. The Lord said to Moses, “Take a handful of ashes from the furnace and sprinkle them in the air so that I will send boils on all the land of Egypt.”

Moses and Aaron did as the Lord commanded them and the boils were on all the Egyptians.

The plague of boils was so serious that the magicians couldn’t come and stand before Pharaoh.

Yet, Pharaoh’s heart became hardened and refused to let the people of Israel go.

So the Lord said to Moses, “Go to Pharaoh and tell him ‘Let my people go or I will send hailstorms on Egypt.’”

Moses obeyed God and told Pharaoh exactly what God told him to say. Pharaoh refused to listen and let the Israelites go.

So God rained thunder and hail on Egypt and fire comes down to the ground from the sky.

The hail destroyed all the flax and barley crops. Pharaoh heart was hardened and did not let the Israelites go.

And the Lord told Moses, “Stretch out your hand over Egypt and I will send locusts to eat up everything in Egypt.”

Moses obeyed God and stretched out his hand over the land of Egypt. Then God sent an East wind and blew all the locusts to Egypt.

There were so many locusts that it covered the whole land of Egypt. The locusts ate up every green leaves of the plants in Egypt. But Pharaoh still would not let the people of Israel go.

So God sent the ninth plague of darkness over the land of Egypt.

A thick darkness cover Egypt for 3 days and 3 nights. It was so dark that the Egyptians could see each other.

But there was sunshine and light in the place where the Israelites live. Pharaoh still didn’t change his mind to let the Israelites go.

And the Lord said to Moses, “I will bring the last plague on Egypt. I am going to bring death on the firstborns of the Egyptians.

Afterward, Pharaoh will let you go. While you are leaving Egypt, you will take all the silvers, gold and jewelry from the Egyptians.

During midnight, I will go into the midst of the Egyptians, and kill all the firstborn of the Egyptians.

Every family must take a lamb and kill it at twilight. The lamb must be blemish. Then you will take the blood from the lamb and painted it on the two doorposts of your house so that I pass over your house and not kill your firstborns.”

When midnight, the Lord went amidst the Egyptians and killed their firstborns.

There were great cries in Egypt because there was not one household in Egypt with no one dead.

When the morning comes, Pharaoh found out that his son was dead.

Pharaoh was so angry that he commanded Moses to take the Israelites and leave Egypt immediately.

Moses and the Burning Bush

September 28, 2012 by Admin-FSN Leave a Comment

One day, Moses was tending the flock, and he came to Horeb, the mountain of God.

Suddenly, Moses saw a bush that is on fire but not burned.

Moses was very curious so he went nearer the bush to see what is so special about the burning bush.

God saw that Moses came nearer, and He called out, “Moses! Moses!”

And Moses said, “I am here.”

God said, “Take off your slippers because the place where you are standing is holy ground.”

God said, “I had seen how my people are oppressed in Egypt. I had chosen you to bring them up out of Egypt to the Promised Land of Canaan, a land flowing with milk and honey.”

But Moses said, “Who am I to go to Pharaoh and ask him to let the people of Israel go?”

God said, “I will be with you and it will happen that you will take the people of Israel out of Egypt and come to this mountain to serve me.”

Moses said, “What if they ask me who sent me?”
God said, “You shall say to them, ‘I AM WHO I AM sent me. The Lord God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob appeared to me and sent me to bring you out of Egypt into a land flowing with milk and honey in Canaan.’

And you shall go to Pharaoh and say, ‘Let us take a three days journey to the mountains to worship God.’ But I am sure Pharaoh won’t let you go, so I will bring plagues on Egypt. Finally Pharaoh will let the people of Israel go.”

Then Moses answered, “Supposed they don’t believe what I said, what I should do?”

So God said, “What is it that you are holding in your hand?”

He said, “A staff.”

God said, “Throw your staff on the ground.”

Moses threw the staff on the ground and it became a serpent. Moses ran away from the serpent.

God said, “Pick the serpent up by the tail that they may know that I am the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.” And the serpent became Moses’ staff.

Then God said, “Put your hand in your bosom.” Moses placed his hand in his bosom and drew it out and it became all white and leprous.

God said, “Put your hand in your bosom again.” Moses did and it was restored back to normal.

Moses said, “I cannot speak fluently. I am slow in speech.”

The Lord God said, “Have not me, the Lord God Almighty that made man’s mouth or make them mute, the deaf, the seeing, or the blind? Now therefore go and I will help you to speak to the people of Israel.”

But Moses said,”Oh, Lord, please send someone else who is eloquent in speech to speak for me.”

The Lord became furious against Moses, and said, “What about your brother, Aaron? I know he can speak well. He is already on his way to see you. You will tell Aaron what to say, and Aaron will speak for you. You shall take this staff and perform miraculous signs.”

So Moses went back home and tell Jethro, his father in law that he want to return to Egypt to see his brethren.

Moses mounted his wife and two children on the donkey and set out for Egypt. Moses took the staff along with him.

While Moses was on his way to Egypt, he met his brother, Aaron.

Aaron was very happy to see Moses and they hug each other.

Moses told Aaron what God had spoken to him and committed him to do. After that, Aaron follows Moses to Egypt.

When they arrive at Egypt, Moses told the people of Israel that God had sent him to deliver them out of Egypt to the Promised Land which will be overflowing with milk and honey.

Then Moses performed the miracle signs in front of them.

The people believed Moses. When they heard that God had heard their prayers and will bring them out from the hardship Pharaoh had afflicted them, they bow down and worship God.

Now the old Pharaoh who knows Joseph passed away and he was succeeded by a new king. The new king of Egypt did not know anything about Joseph.

One day, the new Pharaoh said to his people, “See how the people of Israel are growing. They are much stronger than us. Let us put them into slavery lest they will help our enemies and attack us.”

Therefore, Pharaoh set the slave masters over the Hebrews and gave them heavy burden.

The Hebrews built the two supply cities of Pithom and Rameses for Egypt.

The Egyptians tortured the Hebrews and made their life very bitter with hard bondage.

Then the king of Egypt said to the midwives called Shiphrah and Puah,”When you deliver a baby and see that it is a boy, kill him. If the newborn baby is a girl, you should let her live.”

The midwives feared God, so they did not listen to Pharaoh and kill the babies.

When Pharaoh saw that the midwives did not do what he commanded, he called them in.

Pharaoh said, “Why you did not kill the male babies just like I commanded?”

The midwives replied,” This is because the Hebrew women are vigorous compare to the Egyptian women. They gave birth to their babies before we arrived.”

God saw that the midwives fear Him, and He gave them a family of their own.

So Pharaoh gave a command that every Hebrew boy baby should be cast into the Nile River.

At that time, there was a man called Levi and his wife. Levi’s wife was pregnant and gave birth to a handsome baby boy called Moses. She did not want her son, Moses to be thrown into the river.

So she put Moses into an ark made of bulrushes which is dipped with asphalt and pitch and put it in the reeds by the river bank.

The daughter of Pharaoh was bathing in the river and she saw the ark with Moses.

So she sent her maid servant to get the ark for her.

She opened it and found Moses inside. She sympathized with Moses because she knows he is one of the Hebrew’s children.

Moses’ sister was watching all the while behind the reed.

When she saw Pharaoh’s daughter accepted the baby, she come out and ask her, “Should I get the baby’s mother to nurse him?”

And Pharaoh’s daughter said, “Yes.” And Moses’ mother nursed him.

When the child grew up, he was brought to Pharaoh’s daughter.

And Joseph said, “If you don’t have money, then give me your livestock and I will give you grains.”

So everyone brought their horses, cattle, and donkeys to exchange for bread.

When that year had ended, everyone had no more livestock. This is because they had exchange all their livestock for food with Joseph.

So they went to Joseph and said, “Look, we have no more animal livestock to exchange for food. We only have ourselves and our land.”

Joseph said, “I will exchange your land in return for food.” Joseph bought all the land in Egypt because the famine is so severe.

Joseph and His Brothers Story

September 28, 2012 by Admin-FSN Leave a Comment

The famine affected every country in the world and people came to Egypt to buy grain.

When Jacob saw that there was grain in Egypt, he told his son to go to Egypt to buy grain.

Joseph’s ten brothers went to Egypt to buy grain. The youngest son of Jacob, Benjamin did not go with them because Jacob was afraid that something bad will happen to Benjamin.

Joseph was the governor of Egypt and he was in charge of selling grains to all the people.

When Joseph’s brothers saw Joseph, they didn’t recognize him. Joseph saw them and immediately knows they were his brothers.

Joseph pretended not to know his brothers.

Joseph said, “Where do you come from?”

Joseph’s brothers answered, “We came from Canaan to Egypt to buy grains.”

Joseph said, “No! You have come to Egypt to spy on our land.”

Joseph’s brothers said, “We are not spies! We are twelve brothers of a father who lives in Canaan. One is at home with our father and the other one is no more.”

Joseph denied their excuses. Joseph demanded that they bring their youngest brother, Benjamin to him but until then, he will take one of them as prisoner.

Reuben said to his brothers, “Did I not tell you not to harm the boy? Now, Joseph’s blood is calling out for revenge against us.”

Joseph heard what Reuben said, and he turned away to cry. Then he took Simeon, and bound him before his brothers.

Joseph told his servants to fill their sack with grains along with each one’s money for the grains.

During the journey, Joseph’s brothers stopped to rest. As each man opened their sack to give grain for their donkeys to eat, each man found their money in the sack.

Then Joseph’s brothers return to Canaan and told their father all about it.

They told Jacob that if they were to return to Egypt to buy grains, they will have to take Benjamin along.

Jacob denied their request and will not let Benjamin go with them.

Then Reuben spoke up, “Let Benjamin travel with us to Egypt. If Benjamin did not come back to you, you can kill both of my sons.”

But Jacob still would not let Benjamin go to Egypt because he don’t want lose Benjamin like he lose Joseph.

Once again, there is no more food left and Jacob told his sons to go to Egypt to buy grains.

After numerous times of persuading their father to let Benjamin go with them, Jacob agreed to let Benjamin go.

Jacob told his sons to bring balm, honey, spices and myrrh, pistachio nuts and almonds as gifts to Joseph.

Jacob also told his sons to take double portion of money with them because of the incident last time.

When Joseph’s brothers arrived at Egypt, Joseph asked his servants to bring them to his house to have dinner.

Then Joseph free Simeon and gave back him to them. Joseph’s brother brought out the gifts for Joseph and passed it to his steward so that he may pass it to Joseph.

Joseph asked his brothers about their father well being. When Joseph saw Benjamin, he went to his room and cried for a while. Then he washed his face and came out to eat a meal with his brothers.

Joseph then served food for all his brothers but he gave Benjamin 5 times more food than the other brothers. So they ate and drank and were very happy.

Then Joseph commanded his steward to fill each man’s sack with grain. Joseph also commanded his steward to put his silver cup in Benjamin’s sack.

When daybreak, Joseph’s brothers went on their journey back home.

After they are gone, Joseph commanded his steward to chase after his brothers and said to them, “Why have you repaid good with evil? Why did you steal Joseph’s silver cup that Joseph uses to practice magic?”

So the steward overtook Joseph’s brothers. He found Joseph’s silver cup in Benjamin’s sack and they all went back as hostages to Egypt.

When Joseph’s brothers saw Joseph, they were very afraid and bow down before Joseph. Then Joseph revealed to his brothers that he is Joseph, their brother whom they sold as slave to the Ishmaelites.

Joseph’s brothers finally recognize Joseph. Joseph fell on his brothers and wept. Joseph hugged and kissed his brothers.

It happened that rumor about Joseph’s brothers was spread to Pharaoh.

Pharaoh then commanded Joseph to tell his brothers and father to come down to Egypt and live in Goshen.

Then Joseph gave them carts to carry Jacob who was very old now and the children to Egypt.

Joseph also give his brothers 10 donkeys with Egypt’s fine products, and 10 female donkeys that are loaded with grain, bread, as well as food for his father for the journey.
