1 Kings 3

One day, two women brought their cases to King Solomon.

The first woman said to King Solomon, “Your Majesty, I live with this woman in the same house.

Not long ago, I gave birth to a son. After three days, the other woman also gives birth to a son.

One night, while we are both sleeping, the other woman rolled over on her bed. She pressed on her son and he died.

When she woke up, she found out her son is dead. So she took my baby and put him next to her on the bed; but she put her dead baby next to me.”

The other woman yelled, “The dead baby is hers!”

The first women quarreled back, “The baby that is alive is mine;The dead baby belong to her!”

The two women quarreled back and forth.

Then King Solomon ordered his servant, “Bring a sword!”

The servant brought a sword in. King Solomon said, “Take the sword and cut the baby in half so that both of you can have part of the baby!”

The first woman said, “Your Majesty, please don’t cut the baby in half. I would rather give the baby to the other woman than him dead. Just give the baby to the other woman.”

The second woman said, “Your Majesty, just cut the baby into half so that neither of us will have the baby.”

King Solomon said, “Give the baby back to the first woman!”

When the people heard how King Solomon had judge the case, they praised King Solomon for the wisdom that God gave him.

John 3:1-21

At that time, there was a Pharisee called Nicodemus.Nicodemus was an important man.Nicodemus was a teacher of the Jewish laws so he knows all the ways of God.

One night, Nicodemus pays a visit to Jesus.

Nicodemus said, “You must be from God because only if God is with you, you can perform these wonderful miracles.”

Jesus said, “No one can inherit the kingdom of God unless he is born again.”

Nicodemus said, “How can a man be born again for a second time?”

Jesus answered, “No one can inherit eternal life if he is not baptized in the Holy Spirit.”

Nicodemus said, “I don’t understand. How can these be?”

Jesus said, “Aren’t you the teacher of the Jews? Don’t you get what I am trying to say?

No one has ever enter heaven except the son of God. Just as Moses lifted the bronze serpent on a pole so does the Son of God will be raised up into the heaven.

God loves the world so much that he gave his only Son to the world. He let his Son come down from Heaven to die for the sins of the whole earth.

If you believe me, you are not condemned but if you do not believe me, you are already condemned.

The light is already in the world, but people love to be in the darkness. If they walk in the truth, they would have wanted their deeds to be known to God.”

Nicodemus finally understand what Jesus was saying. He was very happy and he left Jesus that night praising God.

Luke 11:14-23

King Herod had put John the Baptist into a prison because John, the Baptist said to Him, “You cannot take Herodias, your brother’s wife and marry her.”

After John said this, Herodias wanted to kill him but she was afraid because King Herod sided with John.

King Herod feared John and protected him because John is a holy and righteous man.

It came to pass that it was the birthday of Herodias and Herodias performed a dance before King Herod.

Herodias’ dancing pleased King Herod so much that King Herod decided to give Herodias whatever she asks of him. King Herod swore that he will give Herodias up to half of his kingdom.

Herodias went to her mother and asked, “What shall I ask King Herod to give me?”

Herodias’ mother replied, “Go and tell King Herod to give you the head of John, the Baptist on a platter.”

Herodias immediately came up to King Herod and said to him, “Give me the head of John, the Baptist on a platter.”

King Herod felt sorry for John, the Baptist but he had sworn to Herodias before the people so he cannot take back his word.

King Herod sent his executioner and commanded him to behead John the Baptist and bring it on a platter to Herodias.

The executioner did as King Herod commanded and brought the head of John, the Baptist on a platter to Herodias.

When John’s disciples heard about it, they came to carry away his corpse and buried him in a tomb.

Luke 4:1-13

After Jesus was baptized by John in the Jordan River, the Holy Spirit guided Him into the desert to fast for forty days and forty nights.

At the end of the forty days, Jesus felt very hungry. The devil saw that this is an opportunity to tempt Jesus so he said, “If you are the Son of God, then tell these stones to change into bread.”

But Jesus replied, “God says that we shall not only live by bread but also by the word that comes from the mouth of God.”

Then the devil brought Jesus to the top of the temple in Jerusalem and told Him to look down from there.

The devil said to Jesus, “If you are the Son of God, jump down because God will tell his angels to lift you up and make sure your foot will not crush against the stone beneath.”

Jesus said to the devil, “It is written in the word of God ‘Do not tempt the Lord, your God.’”

Finally, the devil took Jesus to an extremely high place where Jesus can see all the kingdoms and their riches.

The devil said to Jesus, “Bow down and worship me and all these kingdoms and riches will be yours.”

Jesus said to him, “Go away, Satan! It is written in the Scripture,’ Worship and serve the Lord, your God only.’”

The devil saw that he could not deceive Jesus and so he left him alone. Then angels came to be with Jesus.

Mark 9:14-29; Matthew 17:14-21

After Jesus had came down from the mountain with His disciples, He saw the scribes were quarrelling with His other disciples.

When the people saw Jesus, they ran to Him. Jesus asked the scribes, “What are you quarrelling at?”

Then a man from the crowd came forward and said, “Teacher, my son has a mute spirit. The devil often throws him into convulsion and he will screams. Then foam will comes out from his mouth and he will gnash his teeth. His body will also becomes stiff. The evil spirit seldom left my son unharmed. I brought my son to your disciples to cast out the demon in him, but your disciples could not do it.”

Jesus answered the man,”O, You of little faith! When will you people start to believe? Bring the boy to Me.”

They brought the boy to Jesus. When the boy saw Jesus, the demonic spirit overcame him and he started to foam in his mouth, gnash his teeth, and became stiff.

Jesus asked the boy’s father, “How long has the boy suffered this?”

The boy’s father replied, “My son had been suffering from this since small. The demon always tries to throw my son into the water or fire so that he could destroy him.”

Jesus said to him, “If you believe, then your son can be healed.”

The boy’s father said, “Lord, I believe. Please take away my doubt and help me to believe.”

Then Jesus rebuked the evil spirit, saying, “Dead and mute spirit, I command you to come out of him now!”

The evil spirit cried out in a loud voice and convulsed the boy violently then he came out of the boy.

The boy became as a dead corpse. But Jesus held the boy up and he was completely well again.

Jesus said to the people, “This type of evil spirits can only come out through persistent praying and fasting.”

After that Jesus and His disciples left the place.

Acts 10:1- 48

There was a man named Cornelius who was a centurion of the Italian Regiment.

Cornelius and his entire household were faithful believers of God.

Cornelius loves to give his money generously to the poor and needy and prayed to God.

One day, an angel came to visit Cornelius.

The angel said to Cornelius, “God had heard your prayers and seen your alms to the poor and needy. Now send men to Joppa to a man named Peter who is living in the house of man named Simon, the Tanner by the sea.”

Cornelius obeyed the angel. He sent two of his servants and a devout soldier to Joppa to Peter.

As they were getting near to the place where Peter is living, Peter went up on the roof and prayed. Then he began to feel hungry.

Peter fell asleep and he dreamed that a large sheet with its four corners bound was let down from heaven.

The large sheet has all kinds of animals that have four legs, creepy crawly, wild animals and birds.

A voice was heard saying, “Get up, kill and eat the animals.”

But Peter answered, “I will never eat anything that is unclean.”

This was repeated three times and the large sheet were lifted up into heaven again. Then Peter woke up.

While Peter was thinking about what the dream meant, the Holy Spirit said to him, “There are three men looking for you outside.” Peter went down from the roof to downstairs and he saw the men.

The men said to Peter,”We are looking for a man named Peter.”

Peter answered, “I am Peter. Why have you come to me?”

They said, “Cornelius, a devout believer of God had sent you to come to his house, so that he could hear you preach the gospel to him and his household.”

Peter agreed to go with the men. He welcomed them into the house and spends the night there. The next day, Peter departed with the men to Cornelius.

While Cornelius was waiting for Peter to arrive, he had called together his best friends, and relatives.

As Peter came in, Cornelius knelt down on the floor to worship him. Peter said to Cornelius, “Get up, I am just a man.”

Cornelius explained to Peter,”Four days ago, I saw in a vision an angel told me to sent men to a man named Peter who is living in the house of Simon, the tanner by the sea. The angel told me that when he comes, he will speak the gospel to me.” And so I had sent men to Joppa to you.

Then Peter began to preach the gospel to Cornelius and his household.

While he was still preaching, the Holy Spirit came and filled everyone at the house and they began to speak the tongue language.

Peter said, “Can anyone forbid the Gentiles to be baptized with water for the Gentiles had received the Holy Spirit as we have?” And Peter baptized Cornelius and his whole household.

When the apostles at Judea heard that Peter had preached to the Gentiles, they were angry. This is because it is the custom for the Jews not to mix with the Gentiles whom they regard as unclean.

When Peter came back, he explained to them the vision God gave him and then they calmed down and praised God. They rejoiced because God had also brought salvation to the Gentiles.

Esther 1 – Esther 10

A long long time ago, there was a king named King Xerxes. King Xerxes’ kingdom covered 127 provinces from India to Ethiopia.

One day, King Xerxes held a big party at the beautiful palace garden. King Xerxes was a very generous king. He invited everyone to the party.

While King Xerxes was giving a party to the men, Queen Vashti also gives a party and invited all the women in the city to be present in the party.

King Xerxes wanted everyone to see how beautiful Queen Vashti is. He sent his servant to tell Queen Vashti to wear her crown and come to him to show the people her beauty.

The servant went to Queen Vashti and informs her to come to the king quickly but Queen Vashti ignored King Xerxes’ command and refused to come to him.

This had humiliated King Xerxes. King Xerxes’ advisor advised him to divorce Queen Vashti.

They said to King Xerxes, “If Queen Vashti refused to come to you, you should divorce her. This is because when all the women in your kingdom heard what Queen Vashti had done, they will also follow her examples and refused to obey their husband.”

King Xerxes listened to the advice of his advisors and he divorced Queen Vashti.

After a while, King Xerxes was calmed down and not angry anymore about what Queen Vashti had done but he still keep thinking of it and the law that was issued because of her.

Then the king’s servant said, “Your Majesty, a search must be made to all the beautiful young women. You should choose Hegai to be in charged of them as well as making sure the women receive appropriate beauty treatment. ”

At that time, there was a Jew called Mordecai who lives the city of Susa.

Mordecai had a very beautiful cousin called Esther. Esther’s Hebrew name is Hadassah.

When King Xerxes orders that all beautiful women be brought to the king’s palace, Esther was brought along with them too.

Since the first day, Esther has become Hegai’s favorite. This causes Hegai to begin Esther’s beauty treatment immediately.

The first 6 months, olive oil and myrrh were rubbed on the young women’s skin; and then in the final 6 months, the young women were treated with perfumes and cosmetics.

Esther’s turn to go to King Xerxes came during the seventh year of King Xerxes’ reign.

Esther pleased King Xerxes more than any of the other young woman, This made King Xerxes fell in love with Esther immediately and he married her.

Mordecai worked as a palace official for King Xerxes. Mordecai warned Esther not tell anyone that she is a Jew; and she obeyed him.

Bigthana and Teresh were two King Xerxes’ guards. They got angry with King Xerxes and plotted to kill him.

Mordecai found out about it and reported it to King Xerxes. King Xerxes then hanged the two men. King Xerxes had all these written down in his record book.

After this, King Xerxes promoted Haman to the highest palace official.

All the palace officials are ordered to bow down to Haman in order to honor him. Mordecai refused to obey the command and he didn’t bow down to Haman.

When they asked Mordecai why he refuses to bow down to Haman, Mordecai replied, “Because I am a Jew.”

They advised Mordecai to bow down to Haman but Mordecai won’t listen to them. So they reported it to Haman.

When Haman found out that Mordecai is a Jew, he decided to kill every Jew in the city.

Haman went to King Xerxes and said, “Your Majesty, the Jews who lives in your kingdoms have different customs than us and refuse to obey the law you had give. Why not give out a law that all the Jews will be killed.”

Haman had the secretaries to write the letter concerning the law and then have them send to every province.  The letter is written in the king’s name and sealed with the king’s ring.

When Mordecai heard about the news, he got very sad. He tore his clothes and wear sackcloth instead. 

When Esther’s servants told Esther what Mordecai is doing, Queen Esther sent her servant to ask Mordecai why he is felling so sad.

Mordecai told the servant everything about it as well as the amount of money that Haman promised to add to the treasury if the Jews are killed.

Mordecai gave the servant a copy of the order. The servant showed it to Queen Esther. Esther said, “No one can go into the king without the king’s permission. Anyone who go in to see the king without being invited will be killed.”

Mordecai sent back a message to Esther, “Don’t think you and your family will be saved. We will somehow get some help if you don’t want to help us. It could be that God raised you up to be the queen at this very moment.”

Queen Esther replied, “Gather all the Jews and tell them to not eat for 3 days and 3 nights. I and my servant will also fast for 3 days and 3 nights. Then I will go in to see the king even if it will cost my life!”

Mordecai listened to Esther and did everything she told him to do.

After three days, Queen Esther went to King Xerxes in her royal robe.

When Queen Esther comes in, she touch the edge of the scepter.

Then King Xerxes said, “Esther, what can I do for you? I will give you as much as half of your kingdom.”

Queen Esther answered, “Your Majesty, I want you and Haman tocome to a dinner which I prepare tomorrow.”

King Xerxes and Haman went to Esther’s dinner. While they were drinking wine, King Xerxes asked, “Esther, what can I do for you?”

Esther answered, “Your Majesty, please come with Haman to the dinner I will prepare for you tomorrow. At that time, I will let you know what I want.”

The king and Haman went to Queen Esther’s dinner again the next day.

While they were dining, King Xerxes asked. “Esther, what do you want me to do for you?”

Queen Esther answered, “Your Majesty, if you really love me, please save my people. A reward had been ordered for whoever that will kills my people.”

King Xerxes said, “Who would do such a wicked thing?”
Queen Esther answered, “Haman.”

Haman was terrified when he look at Queen Esther and King Xerxes eyes, King Xerxes is so angry, he rose up from his seat and went into the palace gardens.

When King Xerxes came in, Haman was kneeling on the floor beside Queen Esther who is lying down on a couch.

King Xerxes said, “Now you want to rape my queen!”

As soon as he said this, Haman’s head was covered. Harbona said to King Xerxes, “ Your Majesty, Haman built a 75 feet high tower to hang Mordecai. Mordecai spoke up to saved your life from Bigthana and Teresh.”

King Xerxes said, “Hang Haman from the 75 feet tower that he had built!” Immediately, Haman was hanged from his own tower.  

King Xerxes gave Queen Esther all the possessions of Haman.

Queen Esther told King Xerxes that Mordecai is her cousin so King Xerxes promoted Mordecai to the highest palace official. Queen Esther then put Mordecai in charged over Haman’s possessions.

Queen Esther knelt down before King Xerxes saying, “Your Majesty, if you really love me, please stop Haman’s plan to kill the Jews!”

King Xerxes answered, “I now give you a permission to make a new law to save your people. You can use my ring to seal the law so that the law will be permanent.”

On the 23rd of Sivan, the third month, the king secretaries wrote the law and distribute it among the Jews, and the governors of 127 provinces from India to Ethiopia.

The law gave the Jews permission to kill the people who want to take their lives on the 13th of Adar, the twelfth month.

On the 13th of Adar, the Jews took their swords and kill all their enemies. Five hundred people were killed that day; Haman’s ten sons were also among the ones killed.

King Xerxes have the bodies of the sons of Haman hung in Susa at the request of Queen Esther.

Then Queen Esther said to King Xerxes, “Your Majesty, please also let the Jews kill their enemies tomorrow just as they did today.”
King Xerxes approved Queen Esther’s request.

On the 14th of Adar, the Jews kill another 300 more of their enemies then they held a big feast.

That is why the Jews celebrate on the 14th of the month.

The celebration is called Purim. Purim is a day for the Jews to feast and exchange food with each other.

Matthew 3:13-17; Luke 3:21-23

During those days, John the Baptist was preaching in the desert about the kingdom of God to the Hebrews.

John wore clothes made of camel’s hair, and he ate locusts and wild honey for food.

John said to the people, “You children of Satan, who tell you to flee from God’s wrath? Therefore produce good fruits so that you will go to heaven and not be thrown into hell. I baptize you with water but the one who is greater will come after me whom sandal I am not fit to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

The tax collectors answered him, “What shall we do then?”

John answered, “Collect not more money that what is expected?”

The soldiers asked John, “And what should we do?”

John answered, “Don’t intimidate and accuse anyone falsely.”

Then Jesus came from Galilee to let John baptize him. John said, “I need to be baptized by you but you have come to me. Should I baptize you?”

Jesus replied, “Let it be so now so that the word of God can be fulfilled.”

And so John the Baptist baptized Jesus in the Jordan River.

As Jesus came up from the water, the spirit of God suddenly descend on Him like a dove.

A voice from heaven can be heard,” This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” (King James Version. Matthew 3:17)

Jesus was filled with the Holy Spirit and returned to his home.

Jesus was then led by the Holy Spirit to be tempted by the devil and He fast for forty days and forty nights in the desert.

During the forty days and forty nights, Jesus didn’t eat or drink any water.

Acts 15:36 – 41

Paul and Barnabas had remained in Jerusalem for some time and they preached the word of God there.

Then Paul said to Barnabas,”Let us go back to every city where we preached the gospel of Jesus Christ to strengthen the believers there.”

Paul decided to take Silas with him on the journey but Barnabas wanted to take John with him.

Paul and Barnabas quarreled harshly over it. Finally Paul and Barnabas split.

Paul took Silas and sailed to Syria and Cilicia but Barnabas took John and sailed to Cyprus.

Paul did not want John as their helper because John abandoned them while they were at Pamphylia.

When Paul and Silas came to Derbe and Lystra, they met a man named Timothy.

Timothy’s mother was a Jewish Christian believer. Timothy’s father was a Greek.

Everyone talked good things about Timothy and Paul wanted to take Timothy along with him.

So Paul decided to circumcise Timothy because the Jews there observe circumcision.

As they went through the churches, they delivered the decree of the circumcision to them and encouraged them to continue in faith in the Word of God.

When Paul and Silas had arrived at Asia, the Holy Spirit forbade them to preach the word there.

When Paul came to Mysia, he wanted to go into Bithynia but the Holy Spirit told him not to go in.

After that, Paul and Silas came to Troas.

At night, Paul had a vision of a Macedonian man asking him to come over to Macedonia and help them. When Paul woke up, he departed for Macedonia.

Acts 8:1-3 & Acts 9:1 – 30

When Stephen was stoned to death, Paul was there.

At that time, there was a great persecution on the Christians in Jerusalem. All the Christians were separated and lived in different places in Jerusalem except Jesus’ apostles.

Paul was one of them who persecuted the church. He entered the houses of the Christians and arrested them and locked them up in the prison.

Paul persecuted the Christians determinedly and murdered many of them.

One day, when Paul was going to Damascus to catch the Christians living there, the light of the Lord from heaven shone on him.

A voice from heaven was heard saying,”Paul, why are you persecuting Me?”

Paul answered,” Who are You?”

The Lord answered, “I am Jesus, the one that you are persecuting right now.”

Paul was frightened, and he said, “I am sorry. What should I do now?”

The Lord answered, “Get up and go into the city.”

God had blinded Paul’s eyes so the men who accompanied Paul lead him into the city. Paul couldn’t see for three days. During those three days, Paul didn’t eat anything.

After three days, God said to Ananias, “Go to a man named Paul and lay your hand on his eyes so that his eyes will be healed and can see again.”

Ananias obeyed the Lord. He went to Paul and laid his hand on his eyes.

Paul felt something like scales dropped off from his eyes and he could see again. After Paul had eaten some food, he felt stronger.

Paul spent a few days with the disciples at Damascus. Then Paul began to preach to the Jews in the synagogues that Jesus is the Christ.

When the people heard what Paul preaches, they were confused and say to themselves, “Isn’t this the same man who persecuted the Christians?”

Paul grew stronger in Christ and He more fervently preached the gospel to the people.

After many days had passed, the Jews made plan to kill Paul. But the disciples helped Paul and let Paul down through a wall in a basket and Paul escaped to Jerusalem.

When Paul arrives at Jerusalem, he wanted to join the apostles but they were afraid that he will harm them.

Barnabas stood at Paul’s side. He told the apostles what happened to Paul on his way to Damascus that his eyes were blinded by the Lord; and how his eyes got healed; and how he converted to a Christian. So the apostle accepted Paul.

While Paul was with the apostles, he preached the gospel to the people there.

Paul debated with the Hellenists and they wanted to kill him. When Paul’s fellow Christians discovered their plot to kill Paul, they sent him away from Caesarea to Tarsus.
